Why CNS Drugs are Hard
My favorite drug development blog, In the Pipeline, recently posted on why developing drugs for central nervous system orders is so challenging:
"A recent correspondence on the topic of “Why aren’t there more drugs for the big CNS disorders” got me thinking about the topic. My take, having worked in the field, is that there is still so much unmet need in that area because we just don’t understand what's going on. It’s hard to come up with disease-altering therapies when you don’t really understand a single disease in the whole field..."

IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Lecture at MIT
Come here me speak at the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology meeting at MIT this Wednesday at 7PM. More info here.
Advances in Neurotechnology and Neuroscience
"Advances in neuroscience are revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain. The national economic burden from neurological disorders in the US alone is estimated at $500 billion. However, new research and new products are yielding a vastly improved understanding of brain disease and injuries, human cognition and behavior, creating an unprecedented ability to treat and heal those in need.
"This talk will provide an overview of the application of electrical engineering to neuroscience, focusing on the rapidly growing market for medical devices that use electrical signals to treat neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. These neuromodulation devices are used to treat disorders including Parkinson’s disease, drug resistant depression, chronic pain, and epilepsy. The discussion will include what is known (and not known) about how these devices work, the engineering challenges involved in developing them, and emerging clinical needs. The talk will conclude with a brief summary of other recent cutting edge research topics in neurotechnology."
